FUTURO ...

20% of new parkings in NYC to be plug-in friendly

As I was just writing in another article: "One of the great things about electric vehicles is that they not only get better quickly as new generations of batteries and power electronics come out, but even existing EVs get more useful over time as more fast charging stations are built everywhere." A good example of this is a new plan by Michael Bloomberg, New York City's mayor, to add 10,000 public parking spots for electric vehicles over the next 7 years (note that because of the way it's worded, I believe that this doesn't mean 10,000 chargingstations, but rather that a station with 4 charging ports would count as 4 EV parking spots).

During a State of the City speech, Mr Bloomberg said: "This year we’ll pilot curbside vehicle chargers that will allow drivers to fill up their battery in as little as 30 minutes. We’ll work with the City Council to amend the Building Code so that up to 20 percent of all new public parking spaces will be wired and ready for electric vehicles.”
Wiring lots and lots of parking spots, even if only with slow-charging stations, is a great idea because vehicles tend to spent most of the day and night parked anyway. If you're doing a long road-trip, sure you might need a big battery andfast-chargers along your path, but for the vast majority of trips, leaving home with a full battery because you charged overnight and then topping it off at work or wherever you're going should do the trick. Gasoline vehicles have trained people to want really long ranges because you only refuel once every X days. But if you can recharge almost every time you are parked somewhere, you'll almost always leave with a full battery and total range shouldn't matter too much except for longer road-trips.
